"Come on get higher"

Today was Riley's track meet for all middle schools here in Loveland. I have never really been a spectator of track and field events. I remember having a field day in elementary school and trying out the 5o yard dash, but it was hopeless for me. I stuck with the jump rope. I kind of like track meets though. Something is always going on. There is the relay, the shot put, and high jump all going on at the same time. Riley's talent is the high jump. It all came down to him and another boy---whose name was Riley too! They were up against each other last week when just their two schools had a meet and this other boy won by a hair. Well, I guess this time it was Riley's turn. He cleared the 4 foot 4 and the other boy missed it. He is so proud that he won against all of the middle schools. He also ran the 200 yard sprint and came in second. (Last week he was first). I guess those skinny legs come in handy!  I think it is cool to see one of my kids do so well at something I stunk at!!

Another subbing experience

I am a substitute teacher for our school district. I have actually started doing more jobs this spring. I subbed a few times this past month. On Wed. I subbed for a 6th grade math/science teacher. It went well. I'm grateful that except for once, I have not had horrible experiences. I've learned some interesting things. I'm finding that some grades (middle school) are easier for me than others (elementary). I learn about the techers personalities. Not all teachers, unfortunately, are organized and detailed, although they make things easier- I don't really 'teach'. I've learned that finding a staff restroom in unfamiliar schools takes time- don't wait too long. And 8th graders still pick their noses. Always look like you know what's going on, even if you don't. I will have a lunch period, and 1 or 2 planning periods to just relax. There is always that one kid that wants to hang around you and talk. I'm learning things about myself, too. I can do things I never thought I could- like be a PE teacher! Subbing helps me be less insecure. I helped out another sub on wed. and couldn't help thinking: why doesn't she take charge and get tough? these kids arent' keeping the rules for her. Am I just tougher than others? Not layed back enough? I do what the teacher has outlined- some subs don't. The kids' reactions when they see me is always interesting. Some just look at me wide-eyed. Some get a grin and say 'sweet!' Or they'll ask me why their teacher isn't here- like I know! One kid asked me how long I'd been a substitute. Did he think I seemed 'new' at it? Or, worse, that I was old? One thing is for sure- I'm glad I don't have to be a teacher every day like they do. I like being at home the most.
